“There is a skeleton inside all of us.”   -- James Mauger, partner/photographer

In these portraits, I chose to accentuate the sitters’ skulls instead of facial features to generate an instant impact of uneasiness in the viewer.

To assess the familiar human form in unusual lighting conditions forces us to recognize the elephant in the room; our skeletons are anonymous creatures – alien-like and for most of our lives, invisible and comes to surface, only after we have been buried deep. It’s our structure, our strength, our protection and our individuality.

Standing life-size in print, these images are meant to intimidate. However, the meaning of those responses is left up to the viewer to interpret and analyze.

As a photographer, I could only attempt to spark a reaction through my work – but viewers reserve the right to relate it to their personal truths.
